Engaging K-12 Students in Cybersecurity

Learn about no cost resources to introduce cybersecurity into your classroom with the CIAS K-12 Cybersecurity Program! We will share how classrooms, beginning in Kindergarten through the 12th grade, are creating a culture of cybersecurity with tabletop card games and other tools. Specifically, the UTSA Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security provides classroom sets free of charge through donations and sponsorships so that schools can teach cybersecurity without expensive technology tools while still sparking student interest in this vital and growing field. These games provide a turnkey solution for teachers introducing cybersecurity to students - without needing a background in cybersecurity. The outcome is student awareness of basic cybersecurity knowledge, necessary for all citizens, while having fun. As an added benefit, these cybersecurity games can spark an interest for further exploration into cybersecurity careers and creating a more cyber savvy community. During the presentation, we will introduce three games: (1) Cyber Threat Guardian, for grades K-2; (2) Cyber Threat Protector, for grades 3-5; and (3) Cyber Threat Defender: The Collectible Card Game, for grades 6-12. We will also provide practical tips for educators, share school's experiences with the program and introduce other program features, such as the CyBear family of mascots, free digital games and more.
