By the end of the 19th century, business and political leaders were dreaming of ways to expand into new markets and into territories abroad. The United States began to look outward and form its own role as a leader among nations of the world. Global conflicts began to engage the United States and tension in Europe would eventually pull the United States into its first world-wide conflict. This was the time of Roosevelt’s “Big Stick Diplomacy'' and Taft’s “Dollar Diplomacy”. However, many Americans were troubled by this version of American imperialism. Imperialism on the part of a country founded in freedom. This colloquium will explore the people, events and issues that led to the United States in becoming a world leader as well as the effects of American imperialism in Latin America, Asia and the Pacific, and the Caribbean.
