School Counselor--Savvy Scoop Workday

Four sessions in one day!
1. Texas State Leadership Autism Training (TSLAT): Learn how to get free resources for training, including approved assessments and more information! Will also show how to access live trainings through the site. Session by Jessica Flores, BCBA, LPC, Behavior Specialist, ESC Region 15.

2. TEA Supports for the School Counseling 80/20 Policy: School counseling duties must align with TEC 33.006 as well as TAC 61.1073. In this presentation, participants will explore the value and resources of the 80/20 school counseling policy. Virtual session streamed into the ESC by Stephanie Lerner, M.S., TEA Counselor Support. (You don't need to register for this one separately if you are in person).

3. Foundation High School Program Research Findings: Since 2017, American Institutes for Research and the Texas Education Agency have been evaluating the impact of the state’s Foundation High School Program graduation requirements. In 2018–19, the research team visited 50 high schools across Texas to better understand how the changes to the graduation requirements (enacted under HB 5 during the 83rd Texas Legislature) were implemented in high schools, including how schools informed students and parents about the requirements and how high schools helped students select an endorsement area.

In addition, the research team administered surveys to almost 6,000 students to better understand their experiences with the graduation requirements and analyzed administrative records for several cohorts of Texas graduates to understand the outcomes for students who graduated under the Foundation High School Program versus students who graduated under the Minimum, Recommended, and Advanced program.

The team will share insights from the students surveyed and outcomes from Texas students who graduated before and after the policy. Finally, the study team is currently researching the new financial aid application graduation requirement. We will share our plans for that research and invite input and feedback from staff.

4. More Questions Than Answers: What We Should Ask Ourselves & Others to Lead a Good Life--School counselors know that the best solutions to students’ problems are the ones they generate on their own. That’s how true buy-in works! But, sometimes, they need a little nudge. This session will focus on the power of Socratic questions – those open-ended questions that make you think, kick-start your problem-solving, and get you unstuck. Greg Hickey, over his career working in mental health, has collected these questions like some people collect stamps! He presents those hard-hitting questions that we can use to help our students (and ourselves) solve problems big and small and, hopefully, lead happier, more fulfilling lives. Session by Greg Hickey, LPC, Mental Health Specialist, ESC 15.
