The book by Penny Kittle contains ideas and strategies for increasing reading stamina and independence in all students. Participants will read and study the professional development book Book Love: Developing Depth, Stamina, and Passion in Adolescent Readers. Through the book study sessions, participants will become acquainted with a different way of thinking about reading instruction. The benefits for English learners and how to ensure that the ELPs proficiency levels are considered and growth is achieved will also be a part of the group discussion. Participants will be required to attend a total of four (4) 45 minute Zoom meetings held on October 23, 2019, October 31, 2019, November 7, 2019 and November 19, 2019. In addition to the meetings, participants will be expected to (1) write a plan to implement the strategies covered beginning next school year, if not before, and complete a reflection exercise to collaborate in subsequent meetings, and (2) conduct some self-paced reading. Both additional requirements will be a total of 3 independent hours. Platform: Google Classroom and Zoom (each day has five 55 minute slots to choose from for which teachers need to be present for at least 45 minutes) Must register for all four dates through workshop numbers: 118830, 118831, 111857, and 111858.
