Don't Fix or Change Me, Understand and Teach Me

Presenter: Jeanine Fitzgerald: We may perceive a child as broken and needing to be fixed. This perception often leads to a menu of quick fixes. Or we may perceive a child as full of greatness, which leads to an effective system of approaches. This session focuses on the latter.

Objectives: At the completion of this session, each professional will be able to:
1. Define the difference between the traditional approaches of behavior management and the current approaches of positive behavior support
2. Identify the causes of the behaviors that professionals find confusing, frustrating and challenging
3. Apply the principles of positive behavior support in real-life settings
4. Effectively support a student that is expressing his or herself through an unregulated pattern of behavior, such as defiance, peer cruelty or impulsivity.
