Struggling Readers MICRO Academy - Cohort 2

No prior knowledge of teaching reading is needed to participate in this academy; this academy is not for reading experts! The intent of the academy is to build a foundation of understanding of early literacy. In this MICRO academy, you will learn the basics of four of the five components of reading: phonological awareness, phonics (word study) and spelling, fluency, and comprehension. The introductory module of this training will include a presentation of a simplified view of differentiating instruction for struggling readers. This includes a discussion on making appropriate adaptations to scaffold the learning for students. The purpose of this MICRO academy is to support you in understanding the very basics of these components of literacy - how to differentiate instruction for the struggling reader by making effective, individualized adaptations for students.

Before registering for this academy, participants should be prepared to commit to 4 days/8 hours of learning. The CPE credits are awarded as a whole and no partial CPE credits will be awarded. The ideal candidate is a current 1st-year general education or special education certified teacher working with students with disabilities at the elementary level either in a resource room or providing in-class support to students with high-incidence disabilities, however, all teachers from K-12 and central office leaders are invited to attend.

Prior to Day 1 of the 4-day academy, there will be a mandatory 15-minute orientation meeting on Friday, October 23 at 2 p.m. All who register for this academy MUST attend this mandatory meeting. Those not attending the meeting will be dropped from this session.

This training is open to full-time employees of Region One ESC area public and charter schools. The ideal candidate is a 1st-year general or special education teacher however, all interested persons are encouraged to enroll.
