Evaluating and Identifying Students with Intellectual Disabilities

Identifying students with ID can be quite complex and confusing when one considers, the types of evaluations required, culture, language, etc.

Intellectual disability means significantly sub-average general intellectual functioning that is reflected in an overall test score of cognitive ability that is at least two standard deviations below the mean, when taking into consideration the standard error of measurement of the test. ID exists concurrently with deficits in adaptive behavior in at least two of the following areas: Communication; Self-care; Home living; Social and interpersonal skills Use of community resources; Self-direction; Functional academic skills; Work; Leisure; Health; or Safety; Is manifested during the developmental period; and Adversely affects the child's educational performance. The purpose of this training is to provide the audience with a deeper understanding of the characteristics of ID, as well as best practices for evaluating and identifying ID.
