Instructional Strategies to Address Dyslexia and Dysgraphia Part 5: Addressing Comorbidities and Employing UDL Strategies

5-Part HYBRID Series with Dr. Cheryl Chase*
Dyslexia is a language-based learning disorder which manifests primarily as difficulty with reading, however problems may also be seen in spelling, writing, and pronouncing words properly. Researchers report that as many as 15% - 20% of the population as a whole have some symptoms of dyslexia, and are likely to struggle with many aspects of academic functioning. Dysgraphia is also a language-based learning disorder, but it impacts primarily writing and written expression. It can manifest as sloppy handwriting, difficulties with spelling, and struggles putting thoughts down on paper. Although less research has been done on this group, studies generally show that between 5% and 20% of elementary-school aged children contended with a writing disorder. These language-based learning disabilities often co-occur since effective reading and writing are founded upon many of the same underlying skills. This series of programs will define the terms “dyslexia” and “dysgraphia” using clear, easy to understand terms. It will also draw the connections between the two conditions, and describe the symptoms and “red flags” of the conditions across the lifespan. Empirically-based treatments, instructional strategies, and tried and true accommodations will be shared.
*The series is designed so that each module is free-standing, but maximal benefit will be gained if all sessions are attended.
