Evaluating Students with Visual Impairments for Additional Disabilities

Evaluation of the student with visual impairment presents unique challenges. This workshop will improve the skills of participants through addressing the following issues:

1. Provide a general overview of visual impairment including differences in developmental patterns as well as characteristics of frequently- encountered types of visual impairment
2. Explain collaborative evaluation as well as contributions that the TVI makes to planning, implementing, and interpreting evaluations
3. Suggest specific evaluation instruments for this diverse population
4. Suggest strategies for determining and documenting the presence of other eligibilities such as mental retardation, learning disabilities, emotional disturbance, and autism/pervasive developmental disorders
5. Provide specific information and cautions that should be included in reports of students with visual impairments
