30 Hour GT Training-(for LISD-Cigarroa MS only)

Day One-Nature and Needs of Gifted and Talented Students allows participants the opportunity to analyze the historical, legal and conceptual understandings of gifted education. The social and emotional characteristics of the gifted student will also be examined. Teachers will demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics and behaviors of gifted learners that is the basis for developing programs that meet their needs. Day Two-Assessment of Gifted and Talented Students allows participants the opportunity to demonstrate an understanding of identification procedures that allow appropriate and equal access to program services for gifted students. Day Three-Curriculum Differentiation for Gifted and Talented Students allows participants to familiarize themselves with the process skill which can be used in the gifted classroom. These skills typically include creative and critical thinking, creative problem solving, and the elements of creativity including fluency, flexibility and originality. The process skills lead to product development which is the ultimate goal for gifted students. Day Four- Curriculum Differentiation for Gifted and Talented Students allows participants the opportunity to gain knowledge of the principles of differentiation and learn to apply them in the classroom. They will also be able to differentiate between the single discipline design, the parallel discipline design, the multidisciplinary design and the interdisciplinary design. Participants will design a semester of study using themes and generalizations to connect the content. Day Five-Curriculum Differentiation for Gifted and Talented Students allows participants to become familiar with the elements of depth and complexity and use them to differentiate the TEKS for gifted and talented students. They will also explore various differentiation strategies including pace, depth, complexity, novelty and independence. An overview of the Texas Performance Standards Project will be provided through a vertically aligned presentation for Kindergarten through Exit Level teachers.
