Reaching the Seemingly Unreachable

Many resources are available for working with children who thrive within the traditional system and follow the expected developmental milestones. But what about the children who are not thriving, but surviving despite the system or those who have given up all together? This session examines a comprehensive survey of common diagnoses and provides strategies that empower those who appear to be unreachable. All children deserve the opportunity to discover their “best self.”
Objectives: At the completion of the session, each participant will be able to:
1. Guide children beyond the ecology of despair and learned helplessness toward the discovery of their “best self.”
2. Apply a collaborative problem-solving process to develop individualized interventions that stress the prevention of behavioral and emotional challenges.
3. Apply a collaborative problem-solving approach to develop individualized interventions that stress the teaching of more effective and efficient patterns of regulation of emotions, behaviors and thoughts.
