The Power of Visualization in Mathematics with Dr. James Tanton

This session will demonstrate the astounding power – and fun! – of visual thinking in mathematics. “Drawing a Picture” is a fundamental problem-solving skill and a tool used by so many professional mathematicians. Yet, so many upper-school curricula eschew this technique, leaving students with the impression that sketching visuals is inappropriate in algebra and pre-calculus classes. Let’s turn that impression around! Let’s see just how fundamental and crucial pictures are to problem-solving, doing joyful mathematics and engaging in deep learning. They say a picture can speak a thousand words. In mathematics, a picture can spawn a thousand ideas!!! Topics Explored: Summation, Algebra, Probability, Infinite Series, and any additional topics upon request!
