Starfish in the Adjunct and Dual Credit Environment (10:45 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.)

The Starfish Early Alert System, was implemented at South Texas College in 2016. It is designed to increase faculty-student engagement and support services. It is an alert system which focuses on at-risk students.

Through attendance tracking and other triggers, the Starfish system helps faculty and support staff monitor patterns that indicate a student may be at risk either because of performance or attendance issues. The system allows early intervention, to assist students in finding resources to help keep them on the pathway toward successful completion.

The Starfish system also provides positive reinforcement to students, through Kudos which can be sent by their faculty. This helps students by encouraging students to maintain their focus and drive to successfully complete their goals at South Texas College.

During the Fall 2017 semester, over 9,500 South Texas College students created and/or updated their profiles in Starfish. During this same semester:
• 15,000 kudos were submitted by Faculty;
• 2,130 attendance concerns were flagged; and
• 5,183 “Danger of Failing” flags were submitted.

South Texas College is dedicated to providing all students with meaningful and successful advising strategies to help provide students with the resources they need to complete their degree/certificate on time. The Starfish Early Alert System provides faculty and staff with a tool for timely and effective intervention for students who can most benefit from it.

This presentation is provided for Adjunct and Dual Credit Faculty’s information and guidance. An interactive training will follow the presentation.
