Chair Academy
Beginning in the fall of 2019, the OPOD created a Chair Academy to support the needs of incoming or newly appointed academic chairs. This professional development consists of 7 sessions held over the course of the fall semester. The College’s deans and experienced chairs identify key competencies needed to successfully lead academic departments, and these competencies direct the content in the curriculum. Every week, participants complete a pre-session reflection exercise to prepare them for the topics and competencies that will be discussed in the upcoming session. During the sessions, chairs become familiar with College policies, exchange best practices, and have opportunities to ask questions and solicit advise related to their duties and responsibilities. Topics include hiring procedures for faculty and staff, resolving conflict, scheduling and course assignments, program management, developing comprehensive and IE (Institutional Effectiveness) plans, and budgets and purchasing. Currently, there are 17 chairs participating in the fall 2021 cohort of the Chair Academy. (See Outline for Chair Academy 2021).
