Honors/GT Annual Update (Middle School)

BISD would like to offer motivated students a comprehensive advanced academic program. This includes Dual Enrollment courses, AP classes, and Honors classes. Honors classes accustom students to faster paces and higher levels of challenges that will help the honor student deal with rigorous college classes. Honors classes also promote self-discovery, personal growth, and the freedom to pursue their passions.

It is important for the Honors teacher to understand the requirements. Honors students should:
• excel in the subject area (earning an 85 or above),
• master state assessment exams,
• and maintain a passing grade in each honors class.

This workshop will help teachers understand the honors classes and the challenges that will be faced in the first couple of years.
This workshop will also encourage teachers to be academically challenging, to work at a faster pace, to emphasize creative and diverse thinking, and to apply a higher level of rigor in the honors class.

The honors teacher will foster higher level thinking skills, apply questioning techniques, incorporate depth and complexity, and integrate teaching and learning research-based strategies from the common instructional framework in every course. (Middle School Teachers)
