Have you noticed that our English learners (emergent bilingual students) may make sufficient progress at the lower language proficiency levels, but tend to “get stuck” as they approach the Advanced and Advanced High levels? Or that they develop receptive language skills (listening, reading), but struggle when it comes to mastering productive language skills, particularly writing? In this session, we discuss the “Why” behind these challenges, outline a simple process for developing targeted language objectives, and explore concrete examples of effective language objectives. Participants will leave with the tools and exemplars they need to incorporate targeted language objectives into their lessons. This session is appropriate for teachers in ESL and bilingual classroom settings.
