Students communicate in many ways—sometimes with words, but often through their behavior. When students lack the skills to express needs, wants, or feelings, challenging behaviors may occur. In this interactive training, educators will explore the link between communication and behavior, learn strategies for teaching and supporting functional communication across settings, and practice ways to respond to behaviors with communication-based supports. Whether in a general education or special education classroom, participants will leave with practical tools they can immediately apply to help students use their voices—verbal, visual, or alternative—rather than their behavior.

We will learn how special education and PRS will sometimes need to work together and what takes precedence. You will get recommendations of what forms need to include and best practices for organization of documentation so that if you should get an audit that you will BE AUDIT READY. Presented by Christina Page: Christina is an Attendance Specialist with the Financial Compliance Division. She began her career at the Texas Education Agency in 2001. She has performed attendance audits and investigations for over 24 years. In this time, she has worked closely with the Student Attendance Accounting Handbook and assists districts and charter schools to understand attendance compliance requirements for funding purposes.

When student behavior escalates to the point of an office referral, the way we document it matters. Clear, consistent, and professional documentation not only supports appropriate follow-up and consequences, but also helps identify patterns, provide interventions, and strengthen communication between teachers, administrators, and families. In this session, educators will learn what to include (and what to avoid) when writing office referrals, how to describe behavior in objective and actionable terms, and strategies to ensure documentation leads to meaningful support for students.
