Join us for Project-L3 Colloquia 3 (Year 2), "The Great Depression, 1929-1941." This professional development session will be held on-site at the Museum of South Texas History (MOST) in Edinburg, TX.
Aside from the profound impact the Great Depression had on the people who lived through it, it also decisively influenced both the institutional configuration of the U.S. economy and the ideological beliefs of generations of Americans. It also changed economics: there was no real “macroeconomics” as Americans now understand it before the Great Depression. In this colloquium, participants will explore the events of the Great Depression in great detail, but the overriding goal of the colloquium will be not to know all the particulars. The goal will be to understand the big themes: immediate causes of the Great Depression; major problematic issues deep rooted in the economy; underlying factors that lengthened the depression; and perhaps most importantly, how do we, as Americans, avoid a recurrence? Exploring the institutional and ideological “residues” of the Great Depression will be an ongoing thread in this colloquium.
