Under the McKinney-Vento Act, homeless children and youth must have access to education and support services to ensure that they are able to meet the same challenging State academic standards as their peers. Additionally, districts must designate a liaison for homeless children and youth to ensure that identified children and youth successfully enroll and have the opportunity to succeed in school. Participants will receive training and technical assistance that support the goals and objectives of their McKinney Vento program. Furthermore, SEAs, LEAs, and schools may not separate students from the mainstream school environment on the basis of their homelessness.

IDEA 2004 requires that students receiving special education services have an individual education program (IEP) targeting their needs. When creating high quality IEPs the ARD committee must review the student’s data, create a PLAAFP, and based on the student’s needs, create the specially designed instruction that addresses the identified areas of need. The focus of this session is on impact statements. Participants will understand the importance of writing a student-focused PLAAFP statement by reviewing IDEAs definition of the 13 disability categories, identifying characteristics unique to each disability, and how they affect a child’s education and impact the learning process.

YMHFA is a skills-based training that teaches school staff and teachers how to identify, understand, and respond to an adolescent (ages 12-18) who may be experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge. This training gives adults who work with youth the skills they need to reach out, provide initial support, and help connect them to the appropriate care. This training includes required pre-work that must be completed prior to attending the live virtual session. Registered participants will receive an email with instructions on how to access the pre-work course. After completing the 2-hour, self-paced online course, learners will participate in a 4.5-hour to 5.5-hour, instructor-led training via videoconference. Participants must attend 90% of the virtual class with 70% participation, complete a post-test and evaluation to receive their certificate. Certificates are valid for 3 years.

One of the most critical factors in how well a child develops communication skills or alternative communication skills depends on the quality, presentation, and consistency of their communication partners. If the student is not acquiring communication skills we need to look at how we are presenting the communication system and adjust to the student's needs. This session will focus on the use of systems of communication that are composed of core vocabulary and foundational academic vocabulary for use by the teacher as a low-tech, augmentative alternative communication (AAC) tool to promote communication with nonverbal and emerging communicators in all academic settings. A make-and-take session in the afternoon will give participants a chance to create communication systems that can be implemented in the classroom quickly and easily. NOTE: This training is intended to build the capacity of district/charter school teachers and staff who work with students with complex needs. All participants must have an email address associated with a Region One district or charter school. All participants will be automatically placed on the waitlist pending verification that they meet one of the intended audience criteria.

Teachers' top priority is helping students reach their full potential. But even the best teachers need tools to help their students succeed. Join us as we explore the district provided teacher toolkit for instruction. This teacher toolkit includes access to a specialized curriculum that targets students from early childhood special education (ECSE) to transition. In this session we will learn how, with the use of this instructional toolkit, we can support our students starting from instruction to the PLAAFPs, goals and objectives and finally to the state assessment.

The three child outcomes, measured by early intervention and early childhood special education systems, encompass functional skills and behaviors that are meaningful for a child's participation in everyday routines. They cut across developmental domains to represent the integrated nature of how children develop, learn, and thrive. The breadth of these outcomes provides a framework for describing and consistently measuring children's functional skills and behaviors across settings and situations. The Child Outcomes Summary (COS) process summarizes information on a child's functioning in each of the three child outcome areas using a 7-point scale. With the COS process, a team of individuals who are familiar with a child (including parents) can consider multiple sources of information about his/her functioning, including parent/provider observation and results from direct assessment. This virtual 3.0-hour session will provide training on gathering information for Indicator 7 (Child Outcome Summary Process) of the state performance plan, and the team decision-making process to assign the rating to enter on the child outcome summary form. This training is specifically for those individuals who work with young students who are 3, 4, or 5 years of age and have an IEP (Individual Education Plan).

Data-Driven Instruction is a highly effective, research-based training that guides teachers and administrators to spend less time teaching their students what they already know and more time on what their students need. It also answers the questions, “How do I know if my students are learning? And if they aren’t, what do I do? Based on the protocol developed by Paul Bambrick-Santoyo and described in his books Driven by Data 2.0 and Leverage Leadership 2.0, TIL DDI advocates for a deeper analysis of student work. First – teachers develop content knowledge by unpacking standards and analyzing aligned assessment items. Then they look at actual student responses, not just percent mastery, to identify the gap between what students show and what they need to know. Finally they create and practice a targeted reteach plan focused solely on their students’ gaps. Campuses that have engaged in this training have seen huge increases in student mastery.

Addressing trauma is now the expectation, not the exception, in providing care to those we serve. It is equally vital that we understand and build resilience in conjunction with understanding the impact of trauma. The combination of an individual’s experience of trauma and resilience impacts every area of human functioning — physical, mental, behavioral, social, and spiritual. School Health Personnel are expected to view the people they serve through the trauma-informed, resilience-oriented lens and to intervene competently in this area. This training, provided by the National council of Mental Wellbeing teaches participants about trauma, its prevalence, and impact, including the latest information on trauma and the brain. This training explores the connection between behavior and trauma and identifies resilience-oriented trauma-informed ways to intervene with all those we serve. Training is in alignment with COVID-19 Public Health Workforce Grant as it equips new and existing school health personnel by providing information / training / and skills necessary to meet requirements and effectively and efficiently fulfill job duties required of school health personnel.

The Texas Performance Standards Project (TPSP) consists of research-based standards and an accompanying assessment system that captures the high levels of achievement that GT students are able to exhibit. Student projects in kindergarten through eighth grades are somewhat structured with students completing a series of activities to arrive at a final product. At upper grades, exit level projects are completed more independently and students work with mentors in the chosen field of study to create a final product. During this workshop, participants examine the tasks and become familiar with the process for implementing the TPSP in their classroom.
