Teachers' top priority is helping students reach their full potential. But even the best teachers need tools to help their students succeed. Join us as we explore the district provided teacher toolkit for instruction. This teacher toolkit includes access to a specialized curriculum that targets students from early childhood special education (ECSE) to transition. In this session we will learn how, with the use of this instructional toolkit, we can support our students starting from instruction to the PLAAFPs, goals and objectives and finally to the state assessment.

This session provides the basics of the legal requirements for Transition, and recommendations for the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committee to consider and, if appropriate, address 10 areas of transition no later than when the student turns 14, or earlier as appropriate. This creates a pathway of Transition services to assist the student in reaching their postsecondary goals. With so much to navigate, participants will learn the difference between annual and transition goals, with a concentration in the three areas for post-secondary goals of training/education, employment, and independent living skills, as well as learn about age-appropriate transition assessments.

The Transition and Employment Services Designee, or TED, is an employee in a district or charter school who is designated as the primary contact for transition and employment services for students with disabilities in special education programs. These meetings are to provide information and resources about effective transition planning and employment services to school staff, students, parents, and agency providers, and to ensure that the employee serving in this role has the appropriate knowledge and skills necessary for providing information about effective transition services. It is important to have someone available to answer questions about transition for students served by special education. A TED is required to collaborate with students and their parents, and the TED must also help identify contacts at community agencies such as The Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC), Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), Department of State Health Services (DSHS), and the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS). The TED must ensure communication between local school staff and regional or local staff at these agencies.

All children have the capacity to engage in activities that teach them about science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM). This session will present special education teachers with an overview of STEAM activities and how these activities can easily be incorporated into daily lessons to engage all students with disabilities. We will review a continuum of activities that can be used in the Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) Classroom through Transition-Aged Students. A make-and-take session in the afternoon will allow participants to create materials that can be implemented in the classroom quickly and easily. NOTE: This training is intended to build the capacity of district/charter school teachers and staff who work with students with complex needs. All participants must have an email address associated with a Region One district or charter school. All participants will be automatically placed on the waitlist pending verification that they meet one of the intended audience criteria.

Next, he will introduce several free resources developed for teens and young adults. This session will also address cultural and linguistic aspects of learning differences, provide ideas for adaptations to accommodate specific disabilities as well as meet student needs in inclusive settings. This session will satisfy the DEI requirements for the maintenance of ASHA certification. Presenter: Joel Shaul, LCSW. This is an overview of State Performance Plan Indicator (SPPI) 13, which measures the percent of youth with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) aged 16 and above with an IEP that includes: Appropriate measurable postsecondary goals that are annually updated and based upon an age appropriate transition assessment; Transition services, including courses of study, that will reasonably enable the student to meet those postsecondary goals; and Annual IEP goals related to the student's transition services needs. There also must be evidence that the student was invited to the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committee meeting where transition services are to be discussed and evidence that, if appropriate, a representative of any participating agency that is likely to be responsible for providing or paying for transition services was invited to the ARD meeting with the prior consent of the parent or student who has reached the age of majority. Participants will review the data collection requirements, sample selection, and data entry requirements for SPPI-13.
