Healthy People 2020 Conference; Mental Health, Suicide Prevention, & Wellness

Healthy People 2020 “Mental health disorders are a concern for people of all ages, from early childhood through old age.” According to the Centers for Disease Control, suicide is the second leading cause of death among Individuals ages 10-34. (2016) In Texas suicide is the leading cause of death for ages 12-18 (middle and High school ages); and, the 2nd leading cause of death for college age youth ages 18-22. (Jason Foundation, 2015) Similarly a report from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (9/2017) indicates that??Latino youth have the highest rates of suicidal behavior and suicide attempts among minority groups, and higher rates of depressive symptoms than any minority group besides Native American youth—an especially alarming situation given that Latinos younger than 18 are the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population.?Some of the issues?identified that are?creating high levels of stress among Latino youth are immigration, cultural identity, poverty, and discrimination. The team of suicide prevention instructors of the Campus Suicide Prevention Program of the?Department of Psychiatry of the UTRGV School of Medicine?have?provided training on suicide prevention to several local schools in response to the ever-increasing number of children and adolescents that have completed or contemplated suicide. It has become apparent that the?number of children and adolescents?presenting with mental health problems and suicidality?is alarming.? As a result, the?conference will emphasize the?need for a concerted effort between the university, local colleges, schools and health care institutions to create awareness about the mental health needs of our youth and to implement prevention and treatment services within a cultural, holistic and interdisciplinary framework.? The need for destigmatizing and normalizing mental health care when needed as well as the importance of implementing wellness program for youth and their families will be addressed.
