This session will engage Dr. Ellen Mandinach in a discussion about general habits of mind that educators need to use data effectively and responsibly. We will discuss how dispositions or habits of mind are different from skills and knowledge and why they are generic and necessary components in educator practice. Some of the dispositions include the belief that all students can learn, the belief in the use of data as an inquiry process, communicating with data, and collaborative inquiry. This session features Dr. Ellen B. Mandinach, Senior Research Scientist at Learning Innovations, WestEd. She has authored several books on the topic of data literacy. Mandinach provides technical assistance to states on data systems and data use. She has served on a number of technical working groups and advisory boards on data use. She was an expert panelist on the Institute of Education Sciences practice guide for data-driven decision-making, and on a National Center for Education Statistics, a working group focusing on researchers’ use of statewide longitudinal data systems.
