* Rio Hondo ONLY Assistive Technology 101-Using Assistive Technology to Support Alternative Access

Participants will gain a better understanding on assessing student’s needs for assistive technologies. This session focuses on identifying the critical issues and actions to influence the provision of AT devices and services for program improvement. Let us explore the legal, ethical and practical reasons for providing high-quality Assistive Technology to students.
In this session, participants will gain a better understanding on assessing student’s communication needs and writing needs, at the earliest engagement levels. Participants will explore tools to facilitate communication for students with significant disabilities and complex communication needs (CCN) who may need to communicate symbolically. The participant will also explore alternatives to traditional writing tools for students who may have limitations in their ability to demonstrate learning via paper-pencil option. Explore software supports and features that already exist in your district to support literacy. Readily available tools like text-to-speech, speech-to-text, word prediction, graphic organizers, and authoring tools can enable students with disabilities to access curriculum and be successful learners.
