One of the most critical factors in how well a child develops communication skills or alternative communication skills depends on the quality, presentation, and consistency of their communication partners. If the student is not acquiring communication skills we need to look at how we are presenting the communication system and adjust to the student's needs. This session will focus on the use of systems of communication that are composed of core vocabulary and foundational academic vocabulary for use by the teacher as a low-tech, augmentative alternative communication (AAC) tool to promote communication with nonverbal and emerging communicators in all academic settings. A make-and-take session in the afternoon will give participants a chance to create communication systems that can be implemented in the classroom quickly and easily.

NOTE:
This training is intended to build the capacity of district/charter school teachers and staff who work with students with complex needs. All participants must have an email address associated with a Region One district or charter school. All participants will be automatically placed on the waitlist pending verification that they meet one of the intended audience criteria.
