Initial Opioid Overdose Education, Harm Reduction, & Naloxone Administration

In accordance to Texas Education Code Sec. 38.224 Training "Each school district, open-enrollment charter school, and private school that adopts a policy under Section 38.222(a) or (b) is responsible for training school personnel and school volunteers in the administration of an opioid antagonist." This training is being presented in partnership with Texas A&M Opioid Task Force to assist school districts with SB 629 compliance.

Training presented by: Joy P. Alonzo, M. Engineering, Pharm.D. Marcia Ory, Ph.D., MPH, Texas A&M Regents Professor. In this training the learner will:

Examine the current status of the opioid crisis

Examine basic opioid characteristics

Describe the role of naloxone in opioid overdose prevention

Identify common risk factors for opioid overdose

Recognize signs and symptoms of acute opioid overdose

Describe the Opioid Overdose Prevention Action Plan

After the initial training, the participants are eligible to join a train the trainer session on 1/11/2024 to train the rest of their staff and resource officers as necessary.

After completing the training, A&M Health provides a naloxone administrative protocol that each ISD can fill in with their contact information, return it for A&M Health MDs signature and a model school board policy will be shared as well.

Training is in alignment with COVID-19 Public Health Workforce Grant as it equips new and existing school health personnel by providing information / training / and skills necessary to effectively and efficiently fulfill job duties.
