SESSION 18: Texas Trustee Institute (New Board Member Training)
9:00 AM - 12:30 PM
South Padre Island Convention Center - Room 104
The Texas Trustee Institute (TTI) has adapted its comprehensive program into a concise, 3.5-4.0 hour offering, specifically tailored for the spring workshop session. This streamlined version retains the core essence of the original experience, focusing on the fundamentals of good governance for first-year board members. Despite the shortened format, the program continues to provide an in-depth look at policy governance and its crucial role in promoting student success. Expert panelists, including seasoned school board members and superintendents, remain a key feature, offering valuable insights and real-world perspectives. Highlights of the condensed TTI program include: 1. One-Day, 3.5-4.0 Hour Intensive Session: Condensing the essence of the two-day program, this session is designed to fit the spring workshop schedule, providing a focused and efficient learning experience. 2. Expert-Led Discussions: Participants will have the opportunity to engage with and learn from current school board members and superintendents, gaining practical advice and insights into effective governance. 3. Core Training Components: The curriculum maintains its focus on crucial areas such as School Law 101, and Policy 101, ensuring participants receive a solid foundation in these essential topics. 4. Networking Opportunities: Despite the shorter format, the program facilitates networking, allowing new trustees to connect with peers and experienced professionals, fostering a sense of community and collaboration. 5. Targeted for Spring Workshop Participants: This special edition of the TTI is crafted to align with the needs and constraints of the spring workshop, offering a concentrated dose of training without compromising on quality or content. 6. Continuing Education: Participants will still have access to TASB’s Online Learning Center for on-demand courses, enabling ongoing learning and development at their own pace.
The modified Texas Trustee Institute program ensures that even within a limited timeframe, new trustees are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and connections necessary to embark confidently on their governance roles, all while accommodating the scheduling needs of the spring workshop session.

SESSION 20: Hiring Foreign Workers

You don’t need to know immigration law, but should know how it impacts your District, your employees, and your ability to recruit new employees for hard-to-fill positions. This session is designed to help management, leadership and personnel offices understand the immigration process enough to develop effective foreign worker recruitment plans, respond to employee questions and inquiries on the various processes and develop internal systems that will help the district stay abreast of expiring visas.
