Project- L3 Colloquia 7 (Year 2): Aftermath of WWII & Themes 6,7, & 8: Cold War, Korean Conflict & Vietnam (Participating Districts ONLY)

Complete Attendance not available before workshop starts.

Join us for Project-L3 Colloquia 7 (Year 2), "Aftermath of WWII, Cold War, Korean Conflict, and Vietnam War." The focus of this colloquium will be on how World War II brought an end to the Depression. Participants will learn about industries that had been ignited for the production of arms and resources to equip fighting forces. People on the home front built weapons, produced food and supplies, and bought war bonds. The Allies not only mobilized more men and women in their armed forces, but also out produced the Axis in weapons and machinery. Discussions will be held on scientific inventions and discoveries that helped shorten the war. Technologies such as radar, rocket launchers, jet engines, amphibious assault boats, long-range navigational aids, devices for detecting submarines were developed during the war that made the U.S. a military superpower.
Despite these improvements, the war created many problems too. For instance, before the war, Germany had been the dominant power on the European continent, while Japan had held that role in Asia. Their defeat in World War II left open positions of leadership. The Soviet Union moved in quickly to replace Germany as the most powerful country in Europe and also aimed at taking Japan’s place as the dominant power in Asia. The Communists under Mao Zedong defeated the forces of Chiang Kai-shek and took over mainland China in 1949. With China, France, and Great Britain devastated and financially exhausted by the war, the United States and the Soviet Union became the two major powers of the world.

Participants will explore the Cold War as a subject of World History research. Participants will analyze and discuss key aspects and perspectives of Cold War history from 1945-1991. (Teaching history & critical thinking through technology/digital media)

This seminar will focus on the “forgotten war” or Korean conflict. It was the first major military conflict of the Cold War and had significant consequences for American politics and international relations of the 1950s and beyond. (Teaching history through multimedia platforms/technology)

Participants will discuss how the Vietnam War had a major impact on U.S. politics, culture and foreign relations from Presidents Truman to Ford. Americans were deeply divided over the U.S. government's justification for and means of fighting the war. (Making connection to today)
