Breaking Barriers: Literacy and Inclusion for Students with Intellectual Disabilities (Parents) Half Day Session

Complete Attendance not available before workshop starts.

Parents will learn ways to support literacy while promoting inclusion at school and in the community, with practical tips to help your child succeed. #LIDESC1

Session I: Beyond Inclusion: Creating Communities of Belonging for Students with Disabilities (Dr. Erik Carter)
Students learn best and flourish most when assured of their belonging. How might schools become places of meaningful inclusion and friendship for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities? In his presentation, Dr. Carter will share a powerful framework for reflecting upon and fostering belonging within our schools and classrooms. Together, we will explore the implications of this work on the ways we welcome, support, educate, and embrace students with disabilities.

Session II: Learning and Literacy Across the Lifespan (Dr. Jenny Kimes and Susan Teaford)
Programs, resources, and instructional strategies utilized at Down Syndrome of Louisville will be reviewed that address reading development from early childhood through adulthood. Ways to implement these in a variety of existing programs and classroom and collaborative settings will be discussed. Neurologically-based approaches to strengthen foundation skills for learning and reading will also be offered.
