Supporting Students with Selective Mutism: Strategies for Educators

This 2-hour educator workshop equips teachers and school staff with practical, classroom-ready strategies to support students with selective mutism. Participants will learn what selective mutism is (and is not), how anxiety impacts a student’s ability to speak, and how school environments can either increase or reduce communication pressure. Through real-world scenarios and hands-on activities, educators will practice evidence-based techniques such as stimulus fading, shaping, and reinforcement of approximations to gently encourage student voice without increasing stress. By the end of the session, participants will leave with concrete tools they can immediately use to create safer classroom where students with selective mutism can begin to communicate and thrive.
