My Story, My Strength: Why Your Story Matters

Leveraging Personal Narrative to Support College & Scholarship Essay Development

Students often tell us, “You don’t know my life” or “You don’t understand.” As educators, we work hard to build relationships—but meaningful connection goes beyond academic support. It requires authenticity, trust, and the ability to model vulnerability.

This session invites educators to examine the power of their own stories and how intentional storytelling can strengthen relationships while equipping students to write authentic, compelling college and scholarship essays. Participants will explore how lived experiences—both theirs and their students’—can be reframed to highlight perseverance, leadership, and character in ways that resonate with admissions and scholarship reviewers.

Through guided reflection, peer discussion, and practical application, educators will develop strategies to model storytelling, create safe spaces for student voice, and support essay development that aligns with students’ identities and goals. Participants will leave with actionable tools to help students move beyond surface-level responses and toward essays that reflect who they are and why their story matters.
