This expert-led professional development session supports K–12 social studies teachers in intentionally teaching and reinforcing map skills as essential tools for critical and spatial thinking. Participants will explore how map skills progress across grade levels, from foundational concepts such as direction, symbols, and scale to more advanced analysis of thematic maps and geographic data. Through hands-on activities, model lessons, and research-based strategies provided by experienced social studies scholars and curriculum specialists, teachers will learn how to integrate map use into history, geography, civics, and economics instruction. The session emphasizes inquiry-based, student-centered approaches and the effective use of print and digital mapping tools to engage diverse learners, align with standards, and strengthen students’ ability to interpret, analyze, and create maps as part of meaningful social studies learning.
