This session for Foundational Math Teachers, uses The Greedy Triangle by Marilyn Burns to deepen students’ conceptual understanding of 2D shapes through engaging, hands-on, and student-centered exploration.
Teachers will actively engage in interactive tasks that mirror classroom practice, including building, composing, and transforming shapes using physical and virtual manipulatives. These experiences emphasize reasoning, representation, and mathematical discourse to support sense-making in early geometry.
Technology connections are embedded throughout the session, as teachers consider how virtual manipulatives (e.g., digital pattern blocks and shape-building tools) can extend learning beyond hands-on materials. These tools allow students to experiment, revise, and dynamically visualize shapes, increasing engagement while supporting diverse learners and strengthening conceptual understanding.
