This professional learning session provides secondary educators with a comprehensive understanding of explicit instruction and its impact on student achievement. Participants will explore the principles of explicit instruction, including why it is an essential evidence-based practice for supporting student learning and increasing academic success across content areas.
Through interactive activities and classroom examples, educators will examine the key features of the explicit instruction framework, including clear learning objectives, teacher modeling, guided practice, checks for understanding, feedback, and independent practice. Participants will learn how effective modeling and structured student practice promote deeper understanding and skill mastery while supporting diverse learners.
By the end of the session, teachers will be able to describe explicit instruction and its importance, explain how it supports student learning, identify the components of the explicit instruction framework, recognize the characteristics of effective modeling and student practice, and identify evidence of explicit instruction in classroom scenarios. Educators will leave with practical strategies that can be immediately implemented to increase student engagement and learning outcomes in grades 6–12.
