This comprehensive training gives early childhood special education professionals the knowledge and skills to implement the Child Outcome Summary (COS) process in compliance with IDEA requirements, while deepening their understanding of how young children with disabilities develop language and communication, a foundation that shapes every outcome area.

Participants will learn to accurately rate children’s functioning across the three outcome areas: positive social-emotional skills, acquisition and use of knowledge and skills, and use of appropriate behaviors to meet needs. The training covers the complete COS process, from team composition and information gathering to rating discussions, documentation requirements, and quality assurance practices.

Because communication is central to how children show what they know and can do, the workshop also explores how young children with disabilities develop language and communication skills, including verbal, augmentative, and alternative communication (AAC) methods. Participants will learn strategies for recognizing and supporting all forms of communication and fostering language-rich environments. They will also see how a clear picture of a child’s communication strengths leads to more accurate, meaningful outcome ratings and to better support for the child.
