UTRGV TRC 17 - Developing Geometric, Algebraic, and Proportional (GAP) Reasoning through Problem Solving (***ONLY for UTRGV TRC Members)

Participants will engage in rich mathematical tasks and be able to identify the characteristics of a Rich Mathematical Task. Participants will engage in hands-on activities that elicit the components of algebraic thinking (Doing-Undoing, Abstracting from Computation and Making Generalizations) defined by Mark Driscoll’s work. Participants will be introduced to algebraic habits of mind and how to problem solve, along with examining student work samples. Participants will develop questioning techniques to promote GAP reasoning. The focus will be on mental models linked to geometric, algebraic, and proportional reasoning meanwhile targeting the 3-8 grade math TEKS. Strong connections to the use of manipulatives for modeling will be explicitly made.
