Engaging, Not Enraging Trauma-Reactive Students

Presenter: Jeanine Fitzgerald - Trauma-reactive children walk through doors every day and their life experiences have influenced the developmental pathway each follows. Often, what a professional defines as pathological is the child's best effort to cope with the event he or she has perceived as life-threatening. When feeling threatened, all human beings adjust their thoughts, emotins and behaviors toward patterns that ensure survival. This session examines an evidence-based developmental framework and offers field-tested strategies that mitigate the impact of traumatic events on brain development and a supporting the movement beyond survial toward wellness.
Objectives: At the completion of this session, each professional will be able to:
1. Create a working definition of trauma as energy that is trapped in the brain following a traumatic event that may range from the ordinary to the extraordinary.
2. Identify the authentic needs of children and how trauma influences the perception of safety, belonging, esteem and knowledge.
3. Outline the teaching points associated with the mastery of emotion identification, modulation and expression.
4. Apply the theory of multiple intelligences to identify and support a child's islands of competence.
