Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Symposium Day 1: Assistive Technology Evaluation and Funding

Complete Attendance
available in:

The American Speech-Language Hearing Association describes augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) as multiple ways to communicate that can supplement or compensate (either temporarily or permanently) for the impairment and disability patterns of individuals with severe expressive communication disorders. Students who are nonspeaking or who have limited verbal communication need access to robust communication in order to access and progress in the general education setting. The focus of this session is to learn more about the assistive technology evaluation process in the school setting and is tailored to speech-language pathologists. It will discuss ethical concerns and situations, federal and state mandates, as well as best practices, including training on the Texas Four Step Model: Considering Assistive Technology in the Individualized Education Program Process. The training will detail the school district’s responsibilities to provide assistive technology devices and services and how to document these devices and services in the Individualized Education Program. Processes for device acquisition will be presented, along with how to trial AAC devices for funding purposes. This program has been approved for 5.50 clock hours of continuing education credit by the Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association (TSHA). TSHA approval does not imply endorsement of course content, specific products, or clinical procedures.
