This session focuses on the following principles of Active Learning: Implementation: When you have completed this session you should be able to: Discuss basic implementation strategies for using an Active Learning approach in school, home and community environments. Suggest activities and environments that match the learner’s developmental level, needs and preferences and can help a learner to develop motor skills such as grasp, reach, balance, independent sitting, standing, and walking using Active Learning equipment and activities. Equipment: Learn how to use various pieces of equipment (both things you buy and things you can make) with each student to meet his/her needs in developing motor, cognitive, social, emotional and perceptual skills. Active Learning is an instructional approach developed by Dr. Lilli Nielsen of Denmark. It is an instructional strategy for individuals who are blind, visually impaired, deaf/blind, developmentally functioning below 48 months old regardless of chronological age, and learners with significant physical, cognitive, and emotional delays. Individuals with multiple disabilities (including cerebral palsy, visual impairment, cognitive impairment, autism, hearing impairment, etc.) are at great risk from developing reliance on others to interact with the world around them. Active Learning recognizes that every child/adult with special needs is unique and emphasizes simple ways to change the environment so that a child becomes an active participant and an engaged learner.

Spend a day with us learning all about the Math RBIS! What are RBIS? A set of research-based practices that highlight common misconceptions in the field. Topics that require conceptual or philosophical changes in approach to instruction. A set of practices that are supported by research and should be present in classrooms, regardless of instructional materials. A set of practices that relate directly to the design of instructional materials AND/OR the approach required to implement them well. The essential best practices in mathematics instruction are content specific practices that are supported by research and should be present in classrooms regardless of instructional materials. In mathematics, there are four RBIS that have been identified. Research shows that these four strategies are effective for all learners. This is the foundation of strong instruction. Join us for this FREE workshop to learn more about these four RBIS!

This workshop is part 1 of a 4 part series. In his book, Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics Grades K-12, author Peter Liljedahl describes 14 structures as “institutional norms–norms that have not changed since the inception of an industrial-age model” that shape students’ behavior from the early years of education (Liljedahl, 2021). At the heart of Liljedahl’s vision lies the concept of the “Thinking Classroom” – a dynamic ecosystem where mathematical discourse thrives and students engage in productive struggle. It’s not just a set of strategies. It’s a comprehensive approach to building a classroom environment where thinking takes center stage. Each session will highlight different strategies from Peter's book. All participants will receive a book at the first session they attend.

A Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is a systematic, evidence-based process for assessing behavior and the context in which it occurs that has been established as a proactive approach that can be used at the first signs of challenging behavior. One primary goal of an FBA is to guide the development of effective, positive interventions and supports based on the function (or purpose) of the behavior, oftentimes in the form of a behavior support/intervention plan. During this training, participants will: -Explore federal and state guidance on FBAs for 504- and IDEA-eligible students. -Learn the foundations to understanding behaviors. -Examine systematic methods to conduct FBAs, including collecting and analyzing data. -Understand the process of developing a positive behavior support plan. -Identify how to align replacement behaviors to the FBA and behavior support plan. -Discuss best practices in progress monitoring.

This workshop is part 2 of a 4 part series.

This session focuses on the following principles of Active Learning: Documentation: Participants will learn: How to use the Functional Scheme to document skills acquisition in your student. How to document progress in IEP goals and objectives for students using Active Learning. How to document student activity in specific Active Learning environments. How to develop a student portfolio for students using an Active Learning approach. Participants are encouraged to bring a completed Functional Scheme Assessment to be able to develop appropriate PLAAFPs and Goals for their students who are functioning at the Active Learning level.

This is the time of year that end-of-year testing is upon us, and before you know it, the school year has concluded! As school years begin to conclude, it is important for campuses to intentionally develop a plan to utilize end-of -year data (EOY) to make instructional decisions for the upcoming school year. The instructional coach plays an important role as they support data analysis of student cohorts so next year’s teachers are equipped with the necessary tools for planning for the following year. This session will support instructional coaches in developing a plan as they collaborate with administrators in reviewing end of year data so effective next steps are in place for the upcoming year.
