Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Symposium Day 2: Active with AAC-How to Target and Model Core Words

AAC Symposium Day 2 is open to speech-language pathologists, SLP-assistants, teachers, and families. The American Speech-Language Hearing Association describes augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) as multiple ways to communicate that can supplement or compensate (either temporarily or permanently) for the impairment and disability patterns of individuals with severe expressive communication disorders. Students who are nonspeaking or who have limited verbal communication need access to robust communication in order to access and progress in the general education setting. This workshop will provide participants with simulation activities using core communication boards and hands-on practice with at least two robust language systems for an AAC device. Participants will learn how to implement instructional practices that support inclusive practices for students who use alternative and/or augmentative forms of communication. Participants will receive training on how to create lesson plans using the Active with AAC framework and participate in creating at least one lesson plan using core vocabulary words.

This program has been approved for 5.50 clock hours of continuing education credit by the Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association (TSHA). TSHA approval does not imply endorsement of course content, specific products, or clinical procedures.
