Enhancing the Writing Experience for Secondary Struggling Writers

Complete Attendance not available before workshop starts.

The cognitive demands required for writing is difficult for many students, however, it is far greater for students with reading or writing disabilities who struggle to stay engaged. In 1987, MacArthur and Graham studied fifth- and sixth- grade children with learning disabilities and found that students spent less than one minute planning for a paper they wrote. Researchers noted that “planning” consisted of writing a rough draft and rewriting the same sentences for the final draft. More than 35 years later, struggling writers are still experiencing the same difficulties that plagued classrooms long ago. In this session, we will discuss what good writers do and explore research-based writing activities that will help improve student writing experiences.
