Active Learning for Students with Multiple Disabilities Implementation and Equipment

Complete Attendance not available before workshop starts.

This session focuses on the following principles of Active Learning:
Implementation:
When you have completed this session you should be able to:
Discuss basic implementation strategies for using an Active Learning approach in school, home and community environments.
Suggest activities and environments that match the learner’s developmental level, needs and preferences and can help a learner to develop motor skills such as grasp, reach, balance, independent sitting, standing, and walking using Active Learning equipment and activities.
Equipment:
Learn how to use various pieces of equipment (both things you buy and things you can make) with each student to meet his/her needs in developing motor, cognitive, social, emotional and perceptual skills.

Active Learning is an instructional approach developed by Dr. Lilli Nielsen of Denmark. It is an instructional strategy for individuals who are blind, visually impaired, deaf/blind, developmentally functioning below 48 months old regardless of chronological age, and learners with significant physical, cognitive, and emotional delays.

Individuals with multiple disabilities (including cerebral palsy, visual impairment, cognitive impairment, autism, hearing impairment, etc.) are at great risk from developing reliance on others to interact with the world around them. Active Learning recognizes that every child/adult with special needs is unique and emphasizes simple ways to change the environment so that a child becomes an active participant and an engaged learner.
