This workshop will provide support and guidance for school personnel assisting students who are confronting significant obstacles to pursuing higher education. The keynote speaker is Liz Murray, whose journey from homelessness to Harvard was chronicled in the film "Homeless to Harvard."
Murray will share her personal story and distribute copies of her memoir, "Breaking Night: A Memoir of Forgiveness, Survival, and My Journey from Homeless to Harvard." Attendees will learn firsthand about overcoming adversity to achieve academic success.
The workshop will also feature mini-sessions from community based organizations on practical strategies to assist students navigating barriers to college admission and persistence, covering topics like:
• Addressing needs of at-risk and underserved students
• Navigating the college application and financial aid process
• Developing academic skills for college readiness
• Accessing support systems and community resources
By blending inspiration and tactical guidance, participants will gain tools to pave the way for greater access and success in higher education for at-risk students. Attendees will leave with Murray's memoir and actionable steps to support students facing significant obstacles on their educational journeys.
