Evaluation Considerations for Students who are Deafblind, Visually Impaired and Deaf or Hard of Hearing

This virtual workshop is presented by Brenna Brillhart, Educational Diagnostician and deafblind education consultant for Outreach Programs at the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired for the Texas Deafblind Project.
A practical session for Diagnosticians, SLPs, LSSPs, TSVIs, and TDHHs focused on the evaluation process for students who are Deafblind, Visually Impaired, and Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Participants will review different types of hearing and vision differences to understand that louder and bigger do not always guarantee access. The session will emphasize identifying appropriate accommodations and modifications based on varied sensory needs and communication modes, ensuring evaluations capture a student’s true skills rather than the impact of sensory differences. Additional components include guidance on collaborative practices throughout the evaluation process, considerations from the Legal Framework that influence assessment planning and decision-making, and a review of key information provided by assessment publishers to support valid, legally sound, and equitable evaluations.

Brenna is an Educational Diagnostician and Deafblind Consultant working at the Texas School for the Blind. She is dedicated to ensuring students with sensory impairments including deafblindness receive equitable evaluations. She has experience working in the classroom, as an itinerant Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and as a diagnostician, she focuses on highlighting student potential and supporting teams in identifying appropriate accommodations and communication access.
