Ready to take the next step into the world of accessible 3D printing? In this hands-on follow-up to Prints Charming: Bringing Learning to Life, participants will explore the foundational workflow of creating tactile learning materials for students who are blind, visually impaired, or deafblind. Attendees will learn how to locate and download 3D models, prepare files using slicer software, understand basic printer settings and safety procedures, compare PLA and PETG filament, and complete a guided print using a 3D printer. The session will also highlight practical applications of 3D printing for tactile accessibility, including tactile maps, math manipulatives, science models, braille labels, object symbols, communication supports, and orientation and mobility materials. This introductory session is designed for beginners and focuses on building confidence, creativity, and practical skills that support meaningful access and student engagement.
Session Objectives
Participants will:
Understand the basic workflow of 3D printing, from locating models to completing a finished print.
Locate, download, and prepare beginner-friendly 3D models using slicer software.
Identify foundational printer settings, safety procedures, and troubleshooting strategies that support successful printing.
Compare PLA and PETG filament and determine appropriate educational applications for each material.
Explore practical uses of 3D printing to increase accessibility, tactile learning, and student engagement for students who are blind, visually impaired, or deafblind.
Gain confidence in beginning the implementation of 3D printing within VI and deafblind educational services.
