Vision Impairment Professionals Cohort: Access Is Not Accidental: The Case for Strong AT Evaluations

Complete Attendance not available before workshop starts.

Visual Impairment Professionals Cohort:
Assistive technology does not “just work” because it is purchased or added to an IEP—it works when it is intentionally evaluated, thoughtfully selected, and meaningfully implemented. This full-day session explores why strong assistive technology (AT) evaluations are a legal requirement under IDEA, a critical component of IEP compliance, and a powerful driver of student independence and educational outcomes.
Participants will examine the purpose and components of high-quality AT evaluations, explore the wide range of AT tools currently available, and learn how to move beyond trial-and-error decision making. The session will conclude with a forward-looking discussion of evolving evaluation practices, including the presenter’s vision for future-ready AT evaluations and a preview of a comprehensive AT evaluation framework currently under development.
This session is designed for practitioners who want their AT decisions to be legally sound, instructionally meaningful, and student-centered.
Learning Objectives (IDEA-Aligned & Practitioner-Friendly)
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
Explain why AT consideration and evaluation are required under IDEA and how this connects to IEP team decision-making
Identify the essential components of a high-quality AT evaluation that support compliance and defensible documentation
Differentiate between device trials and comprehensive AT evaluations
Describe current categories of assistive technology and their instructional implications
Apply evaluation-driven thinking to select AT that supports access, independence, and progress on IEP goals
Analyze gaps in current evaluation practices and explore future-focused solutions
Reflect on how evolving AT evaluation models can improve student outcomes across settings
