Specially Designed Instruction: The RBIS Edition for RLA

Complete Attendance not available before workshop starts.

The RBIS are a set of research-based practices that highlight common misconceptions in the field. These topics require conceptual or philosophical changes in approach to instruction. They are a set of practices that are supported by research and should be present in classrooms, regardless of instructional materials. These practices relate directly to the design of instructional materials AND/OR the approach required to implement them well. The essential best practices in reading/language arts (RLA) instruction are content-specific practices supported by research and should be present in classrooms regardless of instructional materials. In RLA, four RBIS have been identified: Foundational Skills, Coherence, Text-Based Responses, and Text Complexity. Research shows that these four strategies are effective for all learners. This is the foundation of strong instruction.

This session is designed to support meaningful access for students with disabilities to receive on-grade level instruction through the effective use of HQIM, high expectations for instructional leadership, and effective and strategic staffing.

Participants will develop an understanding of research-based reading practices and learn to address common misconceptions in literacy instruction. Explore key topics that may require shifts in instructional thinking and approaches to teaching reading. Learn and apply evidence-based reading strategies that can be effectively implemented across curricula and instructional materials. Build a deeper understanding of the science of reading and how students learn best in K–12 classrooms.
