Illuminate: 4QM - Integrating Content and Skills in Social Studies
10:30 AM - 11:00 AM
Dogwood Room*
“4QM” stands for the “Four Question Method,” a simple, yet sophisticated model for teaching and learning social studies. 4QM prioritizes the historical narrative and marries it to historical thinking by having students answer four questions. What happened? What were they thinking? Why then and there? What do we think about that? Developed by two real-life public high school teachers, 4QM ensures that students master content and skills with lessons specifically designed to align to each of the questions. We remember what we think about. We want students to read, write, speak, listen and actually think about the content they’re learning in our social studies classrooms. 4QM does that!

Illuminate: 4QM Instruction
1:15 PM - 2:05 PM
Elm Room
I have been using the 4QM method for teaching 8th Grade History, which asks four questions (what happened, what were they thinking, why then and there, and what do we think about that). I am a beta tester for the new curriculum and would like to go through a lesson, demonstrating how to teach using that method. The biggest concern during the Social Studies Cohort was not knowing how to go through the lessons. While this would be geared towards 8th grade, all social studies teachers could benefit from it because they can see what a lesson using the 4QM method looks like and get ideas on how to change to fit their grade level.

Illuminate: Spiral Review Daily! Engaging Activities to Reinforce Science Concepts Every Day
12:15 PM - 1:05 PM
Sycamore Room
Science learning is cumulative, with each new concept building upon prior knowledge. However, the challenge many students face is retaining and recalling earlier lessons while learning new material. By revisiting key concepts regularly through engaging, interactive activities, students can strengthen their understanding and make lasting connections between concepts. This proposal advocates for the use of *daily spiral review* in science classrooms, providing practical, ready-to-use activities that can be seamlessly incorporated into daily science lessons, helping teachers create an environment where review is an essential part of the learning process.
**Objectives**:
1. To present the importance of daily spiral review in reinforcing science concepts.
2. To demonstrate how daily review activities can enhance student retention, comprehension, and engagement.
3. To provide teachers with a toolkit of creative and effective spiral review activities that can be implemented in the classroom immediately.
4. To show how daily spiral review can be aligned with curriculum standards and support both formative and summative assessments.
**Expected Outcomes**:
- Increased student retention of scientific concepts.
- Enhanced student engagement with daily, interactive activities.
- Improved understanding of how scientific principles relate to one another across units.
- Increased student confidence in applying learned knowledge to new situations.
- Positive impacts on formative assessments, where students demonstrate a deeper understanding of material. (Gr. K-8; Science)
