This course is focused on the core element of presuming competence for the inclusive education of students with complex access needs. We will walk through a training developed by Texas SPED Support in collaboration with the Texas Education Agency and discuss how the content can directly impact students in our region. The learning objectives for this training are: • Define the least dangerous assumption. • Identify prerequisite skills necessary prior to prescribing an augmentative communication system for a student. • State at least five reasons why presuming competence is the least dangerous assumption we can make about a student’s capabilities when unbiased and valid assessment data are not available. • Provide five examples of how student competence is constructed through supports that they are provided in the classroom. **Attendees will be able to participate in this webinar in their district via the Zoom link provided in the registration confirmation email and professional development records.

When a visual impairment and a learning disability coexist, many times, one may go unidentified. Typically, that is the presence of a learning disability. This workshop explores the often-overlooked intersection of visual impairments and specific learning disabilities (SLD), emphasizing the importance of comprehensive assessment and tailored educational strategies. Dr. Beth Jones and Dr. Tim Allen will help participants gain an understanding of the most recent guidance from TEA regarding the comorbidity of specific learning disabilities and visual impairments, as well as new developments from the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP). Learners will be exposed to the VI-LD-RTI framework and learn how to apply the model using a student case study. Participants will be presented with recommendations for effective assessment and intervention. This full-day workshop is designed for evaluation teams comprising diagnosticians, school psychologists, providers of dyslexia instruction (PDIs), and teachers of students with visual impairments (TSVIs). Participants will leave equipped with enhanced knowledge and practical strategies to effectively identify, assess, and support students with visual impairments who may also have specific learning disabilities, thereby promoting their academic success and overall well-being. Join us for this insightful workshop to expand your understanding and capabilities in supporting these unique learners!

It has been two years since ECR was added to the STAAR assessment. In that time we have all learned, grown, and risked much to meet this challenge. Now that we have a system down and a better understanding of this task, it is time to focus on refining the ECR so that it is not formulaic, but rather leverages the skills of good authors so that we can grow great writers in our clasrroms. This session will focus on any relevant updates regarding ECR, the use of the author's craft within writing, and how to guide authentic revision and editing in drafts. Educators will leave this session will skills and tools to immediately take back to refine Extended Constructed Responses in their classrooms.

Discussing and planning together is our first step to higher levels of achievement. Brainstorming different strategies, such as anchor charts and brain dumps, and then making them fit the specific needs of students will be our first task. Colorful anchor charts can help students remember the material, while brain dumps are valuable to ease students' stress when taking an assessment. After the workshop, it's essential to reflect on when and how to use the tools you made, and that is the baking part of the process. Join us to make, take, and bake these strategies that can increase student achievement. Please bring your laptop or device to create and save materials.

Student agency refers to the opportunity for students to make choices and take control of their own learning. It empowers students to influence their own path to mastery. It can be scary to give control of the learning to our students, but by making some simple changes in our classrooms, we can cultivate a more learner-centered environment and move towards the "Distinguished" end of the T-TESS rubric. Discover how the principles of student choice and ownership and ignite enthusiasm in our learners and help deepen their understanding.

We have taught ECRs for two years. Across the state, in my district, or in my classroom, where are students struggling? What do these struggles mean for instruction, and what do I do next to help my student writers? Simplifying the ECR process involves finding the balance between meeting rubric expectations and managing time effectively. By breaking down requirements, providing examples, and promoting efficient strategies, we empower students to tackle ECR writing confidently.
