Board Candidate Training

Complete Attendance not available before workshop starts.

Board Candidate Training equips prospective trustees to step into school board service with clarity and confidence. Designed for those considering a run—or newly elected—the training provides a practical understanding of the opportunities, challenges, and responsibilities of board leadership.

Participants learn trustee roles and responsibilities, the distinction between governance and management, and the importance of the board–superintendent relationship. Guidance is provided on ethics, conflicts of interest, campaign considerations, and public accountability in areas such as social media, grievances, and community engagement.

The training also covers key functions of effective boards, including agenda setting, time use tracking, and progress monitoring of the district’s strategic plan. Candidates are introduced to board and superintendent evaluations, self-evaluations, and goal setting as tools to ensure accountability and improve student outcomes.
In addition, participants receive credit for state-required trainings: Introduction to the Texas Education Code, Legislative Update, Evaluating and Improving Student Outcomes (EISO), Human Trafficking, and information on the Texas Open Meetings Act (OMA) and Public Information Act (PIA).

Sessions emphasize overcoming challenges and adopting best practices—helping candidates navigate board conflict, manage closed sessions and public comment, and strengthen communication with the community. By the end, participants leave with the knowledge, perspective, and preparation to determine if board leadership is the right calling, and how to serve effectively if elected.
