Using Map Resources in the Social Studies Classroom

Complete Attendance not available before workshop starts.

Calling all Texas History, U.S. History, and World History social studies teachers, new or veteran, who want to deepen their students' engagement with maps! Whether it is in Kindergarten or in a high school social studies course, the TEKS remind us how essential maps are in social studies instruction at almost every grade level.

Key benefits of map interaction include:
• Develop spatial thinking and geographic literacy
• Enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills
• Promote data interpretation and visualization
• Opportunities for cross-curricular applications in RLA, math, and science

Immerse yourself with how to integrate historical and GIS educational maps from the Texas General Land Office (GLO) collections into classroom learning. This session aims to equip teachers with instructional strategies that pair well when utilizing maps as primary and secondary source documents. Where practicable, maps relevant to Kilgore and the wider region will be showcased.
